On May 16, 2025, GCDCR President Mykola Volkivskyi appeared live on TRT World to discuss the outcomes of the Istanbul meeting between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.
In his analysis, President Volkivskyi highlighted the significance of the prisoner exchange agreement reached during the talks, where both sides consented to swap 1,000 prisoners of war each—the largest such exchange since the onset of the conflict. He emphasized that this humanitarian gesture represents a crucial step towards building trust and could pave the way for more substantive negotiations in the future.
However, President Volkivskyi also noted the challenges that remain. He pointed out that the Russian delegation’s demands, including Ukraine’s withdrawal from its own territories and the renunciation of NATO aspirations, were deemed “detached from reality” by Ukrainian officials. These conditions underscore the deep divisions that persist between the two nations.
Despite these hurdles, President Volkivskyi expressed cautious optimism about the potential for continued dialogue. He acknowledged Turkey’s role as a mediator and the importance of international support in facilitating future discussions aimed at achieving a sustainable peace.
